It was a great weekend again! However, it was a disappointment that Kil-Kare was rained out Friday night. It was to be the bus races at Kil-Kare which are rescheduled for this weekend and we really wanted to try the new gas from Estes Oil in Franklin.
Saturday we went to Pisanello’s for pizza and headed to the shop around 1 p.m. We got to Motorcar Auto Body just in time to help get the car loaded. Gary and some of the guys had already been working on the car since 9 a.m. We are trying different racing fuels from Estes Oil. We are also trying different staggers to try to get the Koehlke GreenPro Landscaping #4 faster. We got a new 12 volt battery this week with 1300 cranking amps. Ok I’m not sure what that means either but it more then the diesel truck we use to pull the trailer so starting the car should be easier.
At Columbus, we unloaded the Rebel 105.9 car and went out for the first practice. It had been raining and the track was still green. They also have a weep hold in the track in turn four where ground water can seep onto the track. They were trying to get it dried up. Our second practice, we found that we needed to make some chassis adjustments because our tire temp was off. By the third practice, we were right in line with most of the other cars. Just my luck, we drew 4 and was to be the first to qualify. I qualified at a 13.44 which was third fastest. In the dash race on was on the outside pole and as I described earlier there was a wet spot on the track on the outside of turn four. I was unable to get on the gas as hard as I like to come to the green flag. I ended up finishing the dash race in third.
It was privilege to go over to the fan section to sign autographs before the intermission. It was exciting to meet all my supports and answer questions. I had a great time greeting each one of them. The look on the girl face as she skipped off says it all.
In the feature, I started in the outside of row four in eighth In the Green Pro landscaping Koehlke components NASCAR Whelen LM . Just like playing checkers, you need to know what the other players could do. The guy leading my row was not great on the outside and was having problems with his car earlier. As I quested it I got pushed back to the tenth position it should have been ninth but a guy came in to my line and I choose to let him in because it was early in the race, I did leave the door open a little so it was somewhat my faulty. Unfortunately he hit me and we going to have to do some bodywork and paint. ( no Mirrors or radios in these cars) I had to wait for the right time to start passing. The opportunity to start passing came late in the race. I quickly moved up to the fifth position in just a few laps to go.

We are still hoping to get a tire sponsor so we can do some more testing. Dad is meeting with some people at Sport clips and we still waiting to hear from some others. In the second week of racing, the season opener for Columbus was Saturday. I had a great surprise from my friends at Dayton Christian School. They decorated my Jeep with good luck written all over it! It was really nice to know that all my friends support me!
Sign-A-Rama in Dayton has been doing a great job getting all my decals done. It is such a blessing to have them on my team. This week was GreenPro Landscaping turn to be on the hood of my car. We got a second hood so it’s not a lot of work to switch the graphics on the hood each week. A special thanks to the guys at Autocar Autobody in Spring Valley for getting that done. Hopefully, we have to get two other hoods soon and I can focus on racing, the goals, and not worrying about funding.
Kil-Kare decided that the weather was too cold to run the race Friday night so I got the rare opportunity to spend it with my friends playing miniature golf. I was very disappointed but my friends did a great job of cheering me up! Gary said it was for the best but I wanted to race.
I was anxious to race on Saturday. I got a taste of racing last week at opening day at Kil-Kare and I was ready for opening day at Columbus. We decided to order new shocks for my car from North Carolina last week after waiting for ever for them. At Columbus, the GreenPro Landscaping Koehlke Component Rebel 105.9 Whelen Late Model #4 qualified well and I ended up qualifying second just a few hundredths off the track record. I felt confident I was going to win the dash race after a few adjustments to my car. For those who don’t know, a dash is four lap race for the fastest four cars of the night. After I completed the second lap, I heard a pop sound. I didn’t know one of the new shocks had broken. I finished a strong second but could run down the leader. You can view it on my facebook page.
The feature race was disappointing as the car of the pole lost control after the pace truck left the track. He spun a complete 360. I felt confident he was going to pull it out. However, he suddenly darted back up the track. I was slowing down and pulled up the track but he hit me nearly head on my left front finder taking me out of the race.
I’m sure you know we still looking for an local anchor and co-anchor partner for this season but our biggest goal it to find the partner that will fund next years Camping World Series. We have been told by Roush that it is going to be around 4 million dollars to anchor one of his trucks. Anna, my manager, is hopefully bringing First Source Roofing to the track. Hopefully, they will take the co-anchor spot. She also is bringing a national account to the track that will not help this year, but has an interest in possible next year. Racing season has finally begun. The first Thursday test and tune of the season went well. I was able to get into the low 14 seconds per lap. The faster we got the car going the more a slight vibration arose with the fan on my NASCAR Whelen Koehlke/GreenPro Late Model. We decided to just load up and fix it back at Motorcar Autobody shop I was able to get close to the time I wanted so I felt pretty good.
Opening day, Friday, finally came! I didn’t think it would ever get here. It’s like waiting for Christmas. The weather was perfect. First practice went well. My second test session, I was just a few hundredths off the track record. Wow, what a great crew! I missed my marks and picked up a slight push so I qualified 5th. The heat race went okay but I would have liked to have done better. I learned from my mistakes. Gary won his heat race.
I ended up starting in 3rd in the feature race. I held off the outside pole and was running a strong second for most of the race and then there was a caution. The restart went well except my car didn’t have enough power in the straight a ways. It was also getting tighter as the race went on. I finished third with not a scratch on the Koehlke Green Pro Landscaping. The crew and I are very pleased with our first race of the season and looking forward to this coming week. I’ll be racing at Kil-Kare and Columbus Motor Speedway.
I started my Rebel 105.9 radio spot on Tuesday afternoons at 2:45 pm. I also did an interview with 90.3 the One on Thursday. I have a major magazine interview coming up as well. I don’t know when it happened or how it happened but I fell in love with professional football; the Bengal’s in particular. Truthfully, I hate watching basketball, baseball is ho-hum and I don’t know how you can even call boxing a sport, but football gets my blood pumping. During football season Sundays are awaited in high anticipation, and I have even begun wearing a football shirt to watch the game. What happened to me?
There are different aspects of the game which fascinate me. At times it seems like a testosterone filled ballet with running backs leaping and pirouetting over and around humongous obstacles. Then other times I marvel at the sheer brute force watching 300 pound men turn unannounced cartwheels, land on their heads and get up to do it again.
I also wonder at how quickly the game can turn on one snap of the ball, just like the Bengal’s have proven the last few weeks their bad snaps abounding. Everything can be going one way for the first half of the game but then something happens in the locker room at half time and the other team comes out swinging. It’s exciting and riveting and worthy of nail biting at times, especially this year as a Bengal’s fan!
Many great football players have been immortalized down through history along with numerous gut wrenching games. The book, NFL’s Greatest; Pro Football’s Best Players, Teams, and Games, colorfully illustrates some of the finest teams and players. Chosen by members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame Selection Committee this book lists 100 players and 25 teams deserving the term, Greatest.
Having only become a football fan within the last five years, many of the names are new to me, but veteran lovers of the game will be familiar with these players.
Jim Brown, Fullback for the Cleveland Browns. Brown’s record average of 5.2 yards per carry still stands and he is still considered the NFL’s most accomplished runner ever.
Dick Butkus, Linebacker for the Chicago Bears was feared on the field for his brute strength. One Packers running back said, “I pray that I get up every time Butkis hits me!”
Anthony Munoz, Tackle for the Cincinnati Bengals was huge at 6’6 and 278 pounds. He earned 11 Pro Bowl bids and received the NFL Man of the Year award for his off field activities.
A few of the 25 greatest teams are:
1968 New York Jets. During the Super Bowl game Joe Namath became a folk legend by “guaranteeing” a win. He led the Jets to win over the favored Colts, 16-7.
1975 Pittsburgh Steelers. For the Super Bowl game of 1975 Terry Bradshaw posted his best passer rating and Lynn Swann juggled a 53 yard catch still considered one of the greatest ever.
